Smon was the original king. His strength was so enormous that he bound himself in chains to hold it in.

Then he gave up the throne. He demoted himself to a guardian, and in Timeline 5 he stands guard over the twin robots.

What the chains hold back, and what happens if they ever come off, has not been shown yet.
